Services and Support

Here are the questions I hear most often about services, support, and the kind of help I provide.

What does a Fractional CTO do?

A Fractional CTO gives you senior technology leadership on a part-time basis. That can include strategy, architecture, delivery oversight, vendor advice, and support for your team. You get experienced guidance without hiring a full-time executive.

Do you only offer tech consulting?

No. In addition to tech consulting, I help with IT governance, project management, leadership coaching, leadership growth, Agile coaching, and broader technology strategy. The support is shaped around your goals, budget, and stage of growth.

Can you help with project management?

Yes. I help plan, structure, and steady projects so work stays visible and priorities stay clear. Where it helps, I also introduce Agile and lean practices and coach your team to use them well.

What industries do you serve?

I work across finance, construction, retail, healthcare, government, manufacturing, and other sectors. The common thread is the need for clear thinking, practical delivery, and technology that supports real business goals.

Do you provide training or workshops?

Yes. I provide workshops, mentoring, and coaching in areas such as leadership growth, Agile ways of working, and practical delivery improvement. Sessions are shaped around your team and your situation.

Engagement and Pricing

These are the common questions about getting started, pricing, communication, and the way engagements work.

How do we get started?

Start with a free consultation. We will talk through your goals, your challenges, and what success would look like. Then I will suggest the most practical next step.

What are your rates?

Rates vary by service and scope. Fractional CTO work starts at $220 per hour, and retainer options can reduce the effective rate for ongoing support. After a short discussion, I will provide a clear quote based on your needs.

Are there long‑term contracts?

Not unless they make sense for both of us. Many engagements are flexible, and retainers can be month to month or longer depending on the work.

How often will we communicate?

That depends on the engagement. Some clients need regular weekly check-ins. Others need support at key milestones. In every case, communication stays clear, practical, and consistent.

Will you work with our existing team?

Yes. I work alongside existing teams, not around them. The goal is to strengthen delivery, decision-making, and confidence without adding unnecessary friction.

Working With Iain

These questions cover the way I work, how decisions are made, and what collaboration actually looks like.

What makes your approach different?

I start with people before technology. That means understanding your business, your team, and your real constraints before recommending tools or frameworks. The advice is practical, direct, and shaped around outcomes, not buzzwords.

How do you stay current with technology trends?

By staying hands-on, working across different sectors, and continuing to learn. Technology changes quickly, so I stay close to real delivery work as well as broader industry trends.

Do you offer on‑site consultations?

Yes, when needed. Most consultations begin online because it is faster and more flexible, but in-person sessions can be arranged.

Can you assist with vendor selection and management?

Yes. I can help shortlist vendors, compare options, ask the right questions, review proposals, and keep suppliers accountable.

What if our priorities change mid‑project?

That happens often. We re-prioritise calmly, adjust the roadmap, and keep the work aligned with what matters most now.

Practical Details

These questions cover confidentiality, timing, remote work, post-project support, and how success is measured.

Do you sign confidentiality agreements?

Yes. I respect confidentiality and will sign an NDA when needed.

How soon can you start?

Availability changes, but I usually aim to begin new work within two weeks of agreement. If timing is tight, ask anyway and I will tell you what is realistic.

Can you work with remote teams?

Yes. Remote collaboration is a normal part of how I work. I use simple tools and steady communication to keep teams aligned.

Do you provide post‑project support?

Yes. I can stay involved after the initial project for follow-up advice, mentoring, governance reviews, or ongoing delivery support.

How do you measure success?

Success is measured against your goals, not vague activity. We agree on clear outcomes, track progress, and review what is improving.

Common Misconceptions About Consulting

Some people delay getting help because consulting feels expensive, vague, or overly complicated. These are the concerns I hear most often:

  • Uncertainty about value. I clarify outcomes up front so you know what good looks like.
  • Fear of high costs. Support can be structured to suit different budgets and stages.
  • Lack of trust. Trust is built through clear communication, practical advice, and measurable progress.
  • Complex terminology. I explain technology in plain English and connect it to business impact.
  • Unclear process. I show the steps from discovery through to delivery so nothing feels mysterious.
  • Fear of change. Change is broken into manageable steps with support along the way.
  • Hidden agendas. Advice is based on your goals, not on selling you more than you need.
  • One-size-fits-all solutions. Recommendations are tailored to your context, constraints, and priorities.
  • Loss of control. You stay in control. I provide structure and guidance, not takeover.
  • Perceived complexity. I help simplify the work and tackle it with you, not at you.
